From: ozhawk-l-request@maxwell.pcmicro.com.au [mailto:ozhawk-l-request@maxwell.pcmicro.com.au]On Behalf Of Hammond, Russell Sent: Friday, 25 February 2000 8:24 AM To: Ozhawk-l@maxwell.pcmicro.com.au Subject: Hawkwind in Sydney Hi, Hawkwind came and conquered Sydney last night (24 Feb) at The Metro. It was everything that the pre-publicity said it was with The Solar Fire Lightshow providing a great backdrop for the band with Kris Tate literally lighting up the stage. All good stuff but really an aside to the band itself. Not being a totally devoted fanatic of the band it seems they didn't venture too far from the New Zealand track-list of right stuff, coded languages, motorway city, assault and battery, golden void, forge of vulcan, spirit of the age, assasins of allah, arrival in utopia, blue skin, free fall, brainstorm, ejection, uncle sams on mars and gremlin. I'm not to sure of the sequence so no flames (I've slept since seeing then, my ears are still ringing and my brain hasn't got going). They started bang on 9:15 PM and finished at 11:10 PM with only a 5 to 6 minute break for the one and only encore. They played tight with the only glitch being a 'midi' problem with Harvey Bainbridge's keyboards. It didn't seem to effect the sound so I don't know what was going on. The crowd was well behaved with a decent mixed from 18 (obviously as it is a licensed venue) to those showing signs of middle age spread and loss of hair since buying Hawkwind's first album. While The Metro wasn't fully packed (I'd say about 80%) which makes it better attended than the Byron Bay gig two nights ago. My only issue with the night was Jerry Richards saying he'd see everyone 'next time'. Yer, right Jerry, it only took you 30 years to get here the first time!!!! OK, did anyone get to the ABC studio or the Red Eye Records yesterday? Start typing you slackers. Take care. Russell
